Common Hydraulic Problems We Repair

Hydraulic rams operate under intense mechanical and environmental stress.

Identifying the root cause of component failure is the first step in our precision refurbishment process.

// SEALS

Internal & External Leakage

Fluid loss is almost always tracked back to compromised hydraulic seals. Over time, high operating temperatures, fluid contamination, and pressure spikes degrade seal materials, causing external fluid leaks or internal bypass that drops lifting capacity.

// CHROME

Rod Scoring & Damaged Chrome

The polished chrome bar is highly vulnerable to impact damage or environmental pitting. Once scored, it acts like a file, destroying the rod seals every time the cylinder cycles. We replace damaged chrome bars, machining them to precise tolerances.

// BARREL

Barrel Wear & Distorted Tubing

Heavy duty cycles can cause the cylinder barrel to suffer internal scoring or become ovalized, preventing the piston seal from maintaining a consistent interface. We stock high-grade smooth bore tubing to replace worn sections.

// ALIGNMENT

Worn Mounts, Bushings & Pins

The eyes, pins, and bushings at the ends of the ram bear intense stress, leading to elongated holes and loose tolerances. Utilizing our workshop capabilities, we rebush worn mounts and machine oversized pins to restore alignment.

Our Professional Repair Process

Every hydraulic cylinder that enters our Listowel workshop undergoes a rigorous, systematic refurbishment process.

We do not just fix the visible damage; we restore the entire unit to its original operating specification.

Stage 1 // Diagnostic

Strip-Down & Inspection

The ram is completely disassembled, and all components are thoroughly cleaned to remove oil residue and environmental contaminants. We measure the cylinder barrel for ovalization and inspect the chrome rod for straightness, pitting, or surface scoring under magnification.

Stage 2 // Machining

Precision Remediation

Depending on our diagnostic findings, the rod is either polished or entirely manufactured from new chrome bar stock. Worn barrels are bored out or replaced, mounts are machined back to true alignment, and a completely new, high-spec sealing kit is specified and installed.

Stage 3 // Calibration

Testing & Verification

We do not rely on visual checks. Once reassembled, every single hydraulic cylinder is subjected to rigorous static and dynamic pressure testing on our dedicated test rig. This guarantees that the ram holds full operating pressure and performs reliably before it leaves the shop.

Rod Manufacture & Repair

The piston rod is the most exposed component of any hydraulic system.

When severe impact, bending, or deep environmental pitting rules out a basic polish, our workshop has the engineering capability to repair or completely remanufacture rods to original specifications.

Engineering // Lathe Work

Precision Tolerances

Every rod we manufacture is turned and machined on our precision workshop lathes. We replicate all original configurations with exact accuracy, including internal or external threads, pin eyes, keyways, and shoulder steps.

Metallurgy // Specification

Chrome Bar Stock

We do not use substandard steel. All replacement rods are machined from premium, induction-hardened chrome-plated bar stock. The hard chrome layer provides exceptional surface hardness and corrosion resistance.

Pressure Testing & Quality Assurance

A visual inspection is never enough to guarantee the integrity of a high-pressure hydraulic seal or a newly machined weld.

Every single cylinder rebuilt in our workshop undergoes rigorous diagnostic testing before it is signed off for delivery to protect your uptime in the field.

Diagnostic // Test Rig

Simulated Operational Testing

Using our dedicated workshop test rig, we subject reassembled cylinders to full operational pressures. We cycle the ram dynamically through its entire stroke length to ensure smooth actuation, checking for internal bypass.

Verification // Assurance

Fit It Once

Our strict quality control protocol is built around a simple principle: we pressure test every cylinder so you only have to fit it once. By verifying full load-holding capacity on the bench, we eliminate the risk of failure on-site.

Seal Replacement & Seal Kits

Most hydraulic repairs involve replacing worn or damaged seals. We can supply both standard and non-standard hydraulic seal kits as part of a repair, and replacement seal kits are also available separately for customers carrying out their own maintenance.

See our Hydraulic Seals & Seal Kits page for more information.

We support the transport sector with specialized repairs for commercial vehicle tail lifts, skip loaders, hook loaders, car transporters, and multi-stage tipping gears for HGVs.

Why Choose North Kerry Engineering?

Precision Engineering, Not Just Parts Replacement

We don't simply replace worn components. Every hydraulic cylinder is carefully inspected to identify the root cause of failure before being repaired or remanufactured to the correct tolerances.

Fully Pressure Tested Before Return

Every completed repair undergoes hydraulic pressure testing to verify correct operation, internal sealing and load holding performance before it leaves our workshop.

Repair Before Replacement

Where practical, we refurbish worn hydraulic cylinders instead of recommending costly replacements, helping customers reduce repair costs and minimise equipment downtime.

Fast Turnaround When Downtime Matters

We understand that failed hydraulic equipment can stop work completely. Our workshop prioritises efficient diagnosis and repair to help get machinery back into service as quickly as possible.

Precision Machining In-House

Our in-house machining capabilities allow us to manufacture replacement rods, machine worn components and restore damaged cylinders without relying on external suppliers wherever possible.

Supporting Agriculture & Industry

From tractors and loaders to excavators, trailers and industrial machinery, we repair hydraulic cylinders for customers across agriculture, construction, transport and manufacturing throughout Munster.
